The One Constant (Songlines Recordings 2011)

With their debut release "The One Constant," the Danny Fox Trio joins a Songlines label that includes creative, out of the box artists such as Bill Frisell, Jim Black, and Ben Monder. The record features intricate original music and interactive, searching improvisation borne out of intense collaboration and touring. Featured as a recommended new release on WNYC's New Sounds program, John Schaefer described the music as "changing the sound and expectation of a jazz piano trio."

Songlines owner Tony Reif says:

"Once in a while a CDR arrives in the mail from an artist I've never heard of that really perks up my ears. Danny's music did that, and the longer I listened the more convinced I was that Songlines should put it out. Why? - when there are already so many good modern jazz pianists playing in a more or less straight-ahead style, and Songlines isn't noted for being a traditional jazz label.

A couple of reasons:

Danny's writing: these pieces don"t sound like typical jazz compositions, they have fresh melodies, interesting harmonic twists, and well thought-out development - and the craft all goes towards communicating.

The band: Danny didn't rush into recording - the band (which was formed in 2008) honed its interpretations collaboratively, and the clarity and detail as well as the meshing of the three voices are impressive. The improvisations flow out of the composed material organically, and the roles of each musician are varied creatively from song to song.

Most importantly, the music has depth and staying power. Personally I think this has something to do with the contrast between the energy and cohesiveness of its group dynamic and its darker emotional undercurrents."

Band Photo The Danny Fox Trio plays exciting original music with dynamic group interplay. Almost a mix between a jazz trio, a chamber ensemble, and a rock group, the trio has developed a unique sound that departs from traditional jazz piano format and uses the roles of the instruments creatively. The music draws from eclectic influences: the quirky rhythms of a Thelonious Monk tune, the dark harmonies of Scriabin, the funkiness of a Motown bassline, or the catchiness of a Beatles tune. The group, which features pianist Danny Fox, bassist Chris van Voorst, and drummer Max Goldman recently released their debut recording "The One Constant" on Songlines Recordings.

Pianist/composer Danny Fox was born in New York City where he became immersed in the jazz scene from an early age. In high school, Danny was selected as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and performed at a ceremony for President Clinton. Danny received his B.A. in Psychology cum laude from Harvard University, where he put out two CDs of original music and was awarded the John McCord Prize for excellence in the arts. Since moving back to New York, he has studied with concert pianist John Kamitsuka, performing repertoire including Beethoven, Scriabin, and Prokofiev, as well as jazz pianist Ethan Iverson. Danny has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Big Apple Circus, and the Max Weinberg Big Band, with which he performed alongside Bruce Springsteen. Comfortable in a wide variety of settings, Danny has worked as the accompanist for Catherine Gallant Dance, the musical director of the live comedy show Toast of Manhattan, and has performed for various theater and burlesque productions. He has also composed music for film and TV.

Chris Bassist Chris Van Voorst Van Beest was born in Pownal, ME. He began playing bass his senior year of high school and studied jazz at the University of New Hampshire where he became an in demand player on the East Coast music scene. After graduating UNH and performing around the New England area, Chris moved to Brooklyn, New York where he is active in the jazz, rock, afrobeat, and songwriting scenes. He has performed with such greats as Joe Lovano, Clark Terry, and Chris Potter. Chris plays both acoustic and electric bass and composes for a wide variety of musical settings. He is currently pursuing a Masters in classical composition at the City College of New York.

Max Drummer Max Goldman is an active musician based in Brooklyn's fertile music scene. He spends much of his time touring Europe, the US and Canada with a diverse line up of artists. Whether it is with The Danny Fox Trio (Songlines), Tim Berne, The Elan Mehler Group (Brownswood Records) Midnight Magic (Permanent Vacation), Jessica 6, Basement Magic, Old Time Musketry or Aella, Max brings a unique sound and sensibility.
